Feinstein steps into the ring against electoral college

Senator Dianne Feinstein announced last week that she will propose a constitutional amendment in January to abolish the electoral college so that Presidential elections will be by direct vote of the people. For coverage, check out this San Francisco Examiner article, this San Francisco Chronicle article, and this Sacramento Bee article.

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. introduced such a resolution (HJR 119) in October, which in addition would require that the President be elected by a majority vote (more than 50%). A majority can be achieved through a runoff or instant runoff system.

CA State Assemblymembers Harman and Benoit have introduced a state bill (AB 2) that would elect Presidential electors by congressional district. The result would be a rough proportional outcome, though it would depend heavily on district boundaries.

Davis Governance this Wednesday

The Governance Task Force meets for the 6th time this Wednesday to continue talking about new ways to elect the mayor. Discussion was good at the last meeting. They're leaning towards an instant runoff voting system for mayor, which DCR supports since the mayor is a single executive office. Drop by the community chambers at 5th and B at 7PM to watch or comment.
